Wild and glorious, the dramatic Mayo landscape is both training ground and playground for Maeve Gallagher, international triathlete, and passionate lover of her native County. Her invitation is for everyone to come to explore Mayo Trails and experience it for themselves.
This film showcases Maeve training in each of the three triathlon disciplines. Like a mermaid she dives gracefully into Callow Lake near Swinford, relishing the cool, fresh water as it closes around her. Her cycle route takes in the glorious coastal landscape forming part of the EuroVelo 1 cycle route looking out over Clew Bay (Irelands archipelago) and its countless islands. These roads are quiet and breathtakingly beautiful. Maeve varies her run training, sometimes using the even surface of the Great Western Greenway near Mulranny – the 42km length matches the full marathon distance. Other times she relishes the challenge of Wild Nephin, further West. The Bangor Trail is testing off road running and includes the suspension bridge at Tarsaghaun. The forest in Letterkeen is a superb option for walking and running on broad woodland trails.
For downtime, Maeve enjoys the great outdoors with her family, exploring the sandy beach at Bertra near Murrisk, overlooked by the towering peak of Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain. Their enthusiasm and zest for life is contagious.
Wherever she goes in Mayo and whatever the weather, the beauty of the landscape is inspirational and empowering. Maeve Gallagher wears her county badge with pride and wants to share its magnificence with you.
Mayo – just waiting for you
